A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
